Marcus King is a young street-level drug dealer whose arrest becomes the first thread David pulls in a much larger investigation. Angry, defensive, and immediately suspicious of anyone connected to the system, Marcus makes no attempt to present himself as innocent. He admits that the contraband found during his arrest belonged to him, but insists that a large amount of cash disappeared before his property was officially booked.
Marcus carries the frustration of someone who believes being guilty of one crime has made him fair game for everything else. He has been stopped, searched, followed, and harassed repeatedly, leaving him with little faith that filing a complaint would accomplish anything. His blunt description of the police as another gang gives David an early glimpse into a pattern that extends far beyond one arrest.
