Shifters & Grifters returns with its fifth installment, placing David Jones inside one of the most dangerous environments the series has explored yet: a police department where authority, prejudice, and personal profit have become impossible to separate.
This time, David is not chasing a corporate executive or courtroom manipulator. His attention turns toward Capt. Steve Hampton, a respected police commander whose impressive arrest numbers may be hiding something far more sinister.
The story begins with the arrest of Marcus King, a young dealer who openly admits the drugs found in his vehicle belong to him. What he refuses to accept is the disappearance of thousands of dollars that witnesses saw officers recover at the scene. Marcus does not ask David to prove his innocence. Instead, he gives him something much more troubling: a reason to start asking where the money went.
That question leads David to Ricky Johnson, another young man with a remarkably similar story.
Ricky claims tens of thousands of dollars disappeared following his own arrest, and his attempt to complain went nowhere. As David begins comparing the cases, what first looked like isolated accusations begins forming a pattern. The investigation takes an even darker turn when information connected to a deadly raid reveals that authorities expected a massive amount of cash inside the home, yet officially recovered none.
At the center of everything is Hampton, a man who does not see himself as corrupt. He sees criminals as poison and believes conventional rules only protect people who have already chosen to damage their communities. As David pushes deeper, Hampton’s polished professionalism gives way to a worldview built on contempt, rationalization, and the belief that results justify almost anything. Their final confrontation transforms the episode from an investigation into a judgment.
Shifters & Grifters 5 continues the anthology’s exploration of greed by asking what happens when the person taking advantage of others also controls the system meant to protect them. With a darker atmosphere, grounded street-level characters, and one of David’s most intense confrontations yet, the episode pushes the series into new territory while setting the stage for an even larger story to come.
